情景 1 (被引见)

Scene One (being introduced by someone)

桂花: 介绍一下,这是我的好朋友玉梅 (jièshào yīxia, zhè shì wǒ de hǎo péngyou  Yùméi) Let me introduce my friend to you. This is my good friend, Yu Mei.

树根: 很高兴认识你 (hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ) Very nice to meet you.

玉梅: 你是做什么的 (nǐ shì zuò shénme de) What do you do?

树根: 我是个农民 (wǒ shì ge nóngmín) I’m a farmer.

替换练习 Substitution Drills 

你是做什么的? 我是个农民 (nǐ shì zuò shénme de? wǒ shì ge nóngmín) What do you do? I’m a farmer.

司机 (sījī ) driver

老师 (lǎoshī) teacher

情景 2(陌生人间)Scene Two (between strangers)

大牛: 您贵姓 (nín guìxìng) What is your last name? (贵姓:respectful way to ask elders’ family name).

老王: 我姓王,就叫我老王好了 (wǒ xìng Wáng, jiù jiào wǒ Lǎo Wáng hǎo le) My last name is Wang. Just call me Old Wang.  (“老”:old, a respectful way to address elders in China.)

大牛: 您会说普通话吗 (nín huì shuō Pǔtōnghuà ma) Do you speak Mandarin? (普通话:the common and educational speech language in China).

老王: 会一点儿 (huì yīdiǎnr) Yes, a little.

替换练习 Substitution Drills 

您会说普通话吗? 会一点儿 (nín huì shuō Pǔtōnghuà ma? huì yīdiǎnr) Do you speak Mandarin? Yes, a little.

鱼找鱼,虾找虾,乌龟找王八。(yú zhǎo yú, xiā zhǎo xiā, wūguī zhǎo wángba)

Like attracts like. Literally: The fish looks for the fish, the shrimp looks for the shrimp, the turtle looks for the turtle. “乌龟、王八”: both mean turtle; however, they are different types of turtles in Chinese.

半亩地,一头牛,老婆孩子热炕头。 (bàn mǔ dì, yī tóu niú, lǎopo háizi rè kàngtóu)

Ideal life. Literally: Half Mu land [Mu, a Chinese unit of land area; 1 mu= 0.165 acre], one cattle, wife, kids, and the warm side of the brick bed.

在家千日好,出门时时难。(zài jiā qiān rì hǎo, chū mén shíshí nán)

East or west, home is best. Literally: You will be fine for a thousand days at home, but every moment will be difficult when you leave home.
